What happens to my mobile phone once it’s been traded in?
If your phone or phones can be re-used, then they’ll be sent abroad to developing countries where people don’t have access to landlines.
If mobiles don’t work and can’t be repaired, they are sent to specialist companies for ‘refining’. This involves recovering the tiny amounts of precious metals from the phone and also dealing with the battery, which is the most hazardous part.
